Many of our visitors will have been impressed by the imposing warehouse on the bank of the Louth Canal – for many years used by beekeeper Harold Pennell for processing his honey. Sadly Harold died in recent times and the warehouse was put up for sale and very quickly sold! There is much speculation locally about what will become of the grade 2 listed building – it is widely thought that the warehouse will be converted to holiday cottages, and the house a pub! The house was formerly a licenced house when the canal was operational and after. We will have to watch this space for exciting developments!
We are delighted that we still have a beekeeper in Austen Fen, Daryl, Emma and family are keeping this traditional craft alive – this is how they describe their business “Stax of Wax” :-
“We are a family run business based in Lincolnshire, England. What was once a hobby with just one hive became something the whole family enjoyed and we all became beekeepers, even our youngest daughter at five years had her own bees and hive. We made candles with our wax and produced our own honey. We sold these items locally and make small batches at a time and now we want to share what we love doing by giving everyone a chance to enjoy our products. We hope you enjoy our products as much as we love handcrafting and producing them.”
